The product description is somewhat contradictory, so just to be clear this converts the 3.5mm headphone jack found on many newer multimedia phones (i.e. iPhone) and allows you to plug in a standard 2.5mm wired earpiece or headset. I'm using it to connect an LG Dare with a simple Plantronics earpiece / boom microphone and it works fine.
While this is one of the pricier 2.5 to 3.5 adaptors on Amazon, it's unclear how many perform the same function as this one. I just chose this one because other reviewers had luck converting in the direction I needed. Be aware that the wire between connecting the two ends is rather thin and looks like it could fray with extended use. Otherwise, it's a solid buy.
UPDATE: I purchased a second one of these adapters in April 2010 and something has changed. The new one does not with my LG Dare and wired headset. Audio from the phone comes out, but the microphone on the headset no longer works.

The iPhone headset is pretty good for listening to music, but as a telephone headset it leaves much to be desired. I kept thinking, "if only there was a way to use my old Motorola-compatible headset with my iPhone..."
That's exactly what this adapter lets you do. I plugged my headset into the adapter, plugged the adapter into the iPhone, and the rest is hands-free history.
It was easily worth the price to be able to use a headset with a boom microphone-- everyone I talk to thanks me.
