Customer Reviews
I have owned wireless headphones going all the way back to the first infrared sets on the market. My previous set was an Audio Unlimited 900Mhz set also purchased from Amazon. When they died after a year I looked forward to these 2.4 Ghz headphones from Acoustic Research, model AWD 211. They've been a mixed blessing.
Sound quality is excellent, much better than the old 900Mhz set. The new set has 2 speakers per earphone.
Range is not as good as the previous 900 Mhz set, but within the same room or directly adjacent room, the improved sound quality makes up for it. Outside the house, reception is spotty. Of course, I didn't buy these headphones to only hear the TV in the front yard. About 50 feet is the limit, depending on obstructions.
Construction is much improved over my previous 900 Mhz set, which was retired because they physically broke. The head frame was 100% plastic and kept cracking. After a year, they were more repair tape than headphone. The Acoustic Research set has real metal reinforcing the head frame.
The real reason I don't rate these headphones higher than 3 is the weird replacement battery problem, the manufacturer's looney customer service and the erroneous manual that ships with the headphones. They come with a pair of generic 800mAh NiMH AA batteries. Considering that 800mAh is the capacity of many AAA batteries, this seems unusual. Finding additional 800mAh AA batteries has been next to impossible. I tried to use some 2300mAh and 2450mAh NiMH AA batteries which will power the headphones, but will not recharge using the recharging cradle base supplied,- and I mean absolutely not at all. The cradle base recharging indicator light will not come on and the batteries receive no recharging. I thought the AWD211 set I bought was defective and ordered a replacement set from Amazon which behaved exactly the same. I've used many different capacity NiMH batteries with previous headphones with no recharging problems.
I then corresponded with Acoustic Research customer service. They would not comment on the battery problem except to tell me that using higher capacity batteries would void the warranty. I pointed out that nowhere in the manual did it state this. They had no comment. The manual is also in error in describing the product. It has a volume button, not a "wheel" and a "mood light" feature not explained anywhere. It appears that the manual is a mashup of previous model manuals. The most aggravating problem was, of course, ordering the replacement set of headphones from Amazon when an explanation of the product's battery eccentricities in the manual would have made all that unnecessary. I do like these headphones well enough to keep both sets. The rest of this review posted 11-18-11:
After MONTHS of attempting to buy EXACT duplicates of the AA 800mAh NiMH 1.2V originally supplied batteries I finally obtained the closest possible substitute, the EXACT Acoustic Research specs, from an eBay seller in Germany, eBay item number 160631849539 -8 batteries.
These batteries do NOT have the "bare Metal" band described by reviewer Jack E Rhyner which IS present on the Acoustic Research supplied batteries and they will NOT recharge. I understand Acoustic's need to not have batteries larger than 800mAh put on its cradle charger, but to not offer its proprietary batteries for sale and inconvenience its customers by requiring a separate charger is just wrong. I'll report back once I modify the batteries. Later on 11-18-11:
SUCCESS! I took off about 0.25 inch of the vinyl sleeve of the German batteries to approximately match the appearance of the Acoustic Research supplied batteries. This allows a third contact in the headphones to use the battery case as a jumper to allow recharging. All you need is an Exacto knife and tweezers or a razor blade and really good fingernails. An unexpected side benefit of the German batteries is improved sound quality, although I have no explanation for this. WHOO HOO
I received the item and used one day later. I am very happy with the headphones except that when the microwave is on, there is static. The battery life is terrible. Its kinda tight on my ears. All this tidbit things are solveable. I am always happy to purchase items at Amazon.
